You were right.
I'm running Slackware, and using NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.05 gave me the same horrible effects. Downgrading the driver to NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.19 solved the problem. Framerate took a bit of a hit, but hey, anything was better than those artefacts.
