I'm using Catalyst 10.9 now and have been using since Catalyst 8.xx on HD2600 XT. The _biggest_ issue was setting up drivers in the first place! It takes more than just ./ati-driver-installer*.run
Having switched to Arch, I tried open-source. 2D performance was good, but 3D was $#!*. So I'm back to proprietary. Suits me fine.
Bottom line is, if you use an older card use open source (even AMD suggests); if you use a newer card, understand the documentation that comes with the drivers.
This is Linux, where sometimes you have to do your homework.
