Yeah, macports is nice, however you still have to compile everything (no binaries to just grab unfortunately). There's another one like it called fink (faster as you can download binaries) however they aren't updated as quickly as macports, so waiting 1-3 hours to compile everything is worth it (not to mention you don't need to compile the dependencies every time)!
I did try the graphic tweaks, it does make a difference. The 'glow' effects on the text in game as well as when you mouse over units (how friendly units are outlined in green and hostile in red, etc) seem to be the culprit. For example, I made my character walk in a straight line and maintained a constant FPS of 45 on a late-2008 MBP (9600M GT). When I walk the same line and put my mouse over a unit, the FPS spikes down to about 17-22 until my mouse in no longer causing the glow effect. The downside to that is that you cannot see what unit you are targeting if they are all clustered together, however it's a small sacrifice to pay to actually get some decent performance out of it.
The only immediate problems I see are some font issues on the main news/JoJ page, the shop issue, and the glow effects. Other than that this game runs fine.
