I had the same issue, but my solution was rather simple...
I installed dao as mentioned above (wine set to win2000), installed physix and patched it, but I installed vcrun2005 after every other operation as the last part so it dont gets corrupted. And now it runs just perfectly (except some minor graphic glitches, but well...)
And I guess I have to reinstall dao after a new patch comes out.
