I'm starting getting the same issue after a Steam update (which was indeed aimed at fixing L4D2 issues) - I think it was either the latest as of this date, or the one before last. The problem is avoided for me as the people I play with usually host rather than myself, so I just re-join their server. When hosting or playing single player it must be a lot more of an issue though.
