Should say:

Adjusted 'Space=' in Application Data/Bioshock2/User.ini to read 'Space=AcceptOrSelect' for every instance.

Whoops, I should've checked this page more routinely.. :]

I've started out with a few of your steps and lo and behold, it works. Reversing the changes to see what was making the difference came up with the -nointro option. So the -nointro option actually causes Bioshock 2 not to wait for a space when the level has been loaded. I hope that it still yields the full game experience apart from not waiting for input and not showing the intro when starting Bioshock 2. (The level starts with its own intro, so that seems to be good Interesting as well that the spacebar works fine after launching the level.)

So then, a quickstart:
- Download Bioshock2 from Steam
- Set -nointro option in Bioshock2's preferences in Steam (or add it to your custom launcher)
- Use Razor1911's Bioshock2Launcher.exe
- .. Play the game! :D

Thanks so much, blaise, for not giving up and sharing the solution :]!

For me, it doesnt work with -dx9 flag, without it, it runs great:
wine ./Bioshock2Launcher.exe -nointro

In the desktop launcher i have to have the -opengl flag or it'll crash

other info: razor1911 launcher and fake xlive.dll; wine 1.4; using d3dx9_36; no .ini spacebar changes
