I'm on a HD4870, 2.6.32 kernel and the 10.7 drivers, and I have the same need for the OffscreenRenderingMode registry entry set to 'backbuffer'.
I did attempt to make the beta go using earlier drivers, and I got all sorts of random gibberish in the menu and loading screens. Getting the retail Starcraft and upgrading to the 10.7 drivers fixed that for me.
I also tried Wine 1.3 and had the game cinematics flipped upside down as you describe. I'm back to 1.2-rc7 now - there's very little difference between that and the 1.2 release, I'm told.
Game is now playable, more or less, except that I have the 'missing letters' problem described below.
