Well I didn't get the letters fixed at all with my 4870, 10.7 drivers, and wines 1.2-rc7/1.3, and the registry entries didn't help any.
The garble you get with medium or higher shaders is probably something to do with the OffscreenRenderingMode 'backbuffer' option that you need to stop the garble. On my system, setting it to 'fbo' leaves a small portion of the screen garble-free, and if I set shaders higher, that portion looks great, with proper shadows and whatnot.
