the sound hissing and/or popping is most likely due to the motherboards sheilding not being sufficient. Whenever the cpu load increases, the noises start.
This is a common problem with a lot of Gigabyte's.

I'm also getting some clicking and popping in the background, but it only begins with the load screen. After that it continues into the menu after leaving the game. This is on an Auzentech Prelude with headphones connected to the analog front channel.
And no, this has nothing to do with noise from other components...I'm fairly certain that anyone posting here is capable of differentiating between a genuine software problem and signal noise.
I also have mmdevapi.dll set to disabled. I read that if you compile WINE with openal you don't have to do this. I'm not really sure if the multilib package of wine on Arch x86_64 has openal.

I had a similar problem on Ubuntu 10.04. I've mostly resolved the issue by changing my gstreamer configuration to use ALSA instead of PulseAudio. Check the following webpage:
I just used the last method, i.e. run gstreamer-properties & switch from autodetect to ALSA.
Note however, that this causes other sound issues in ubuntu, i.e. static in the login sound. While I don't mind this much, you could probably setup a simple script to switch only when you launch SC2.
Also note that not every sound problem is gone, I still get the occasional static, but it's usually during a loading screen, and compared to the previous problems, that's a non-issue.
