I forgot to add that you also need a recent (2.6.35 or 2.6.36) kernel to avoid access violations.

One more note... if you are getting access violations after pushing the graphics settings above Low, it is likely because the game cannot properly detect your video card. I don't know the specifics of it, but this seems to fix it for me (on NVIDIA):

HYKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Wine > Direct3D

UseGLSL: disabled
OffscreenRenderingMode: fbo
DirectDrawRenderer: opengl
VideoMemorySize: VRAM_SIZE_IN_MB (e.g 1024 for 1GB of VRAM)

Earlier posters have found similar solutions of varying effectiveness.

If you are getting big, black bars/strips on the terrain when using texture settings higher than Low, this seems to be some kind of combination problem with the game's windowed driver combined with not being able to properly detect specifics about the video card.

I was able to almost completely eliminate the problem on my graphics card (GTS 450), by using fullscreen mode instead and forcing wine to emulate a virtual desktop of the window size I wanted. Make sure to pick a fullscreen mode in the game to match.

After this I was able to use High (but not Ultra, despite having a 1GB card) textures without the huge black bars.

GeForce 8 works fine
by Dieuwe de Boer on Wednesday January 5th 2011, 13:31
I'm running a GeForce 8600 GT 256MB and the game works fine for me. I have shaders on low, and the rest of the options which on medium (with the ones requiring the processor on high). I usually don't experience any problems except for some lag when there are too many units on the map.

I've also got 2GB of RAM and an Intel Duo Core 2.00GHz processor.

I'm running sc2 with almost same performance as on xp, in ubuntu 10.10 wine version 1.2.1 and a crappy old 7900gt.
(All gfx settings on low, but I had that in windows too).

So don't be scared to try if your card is a little older :)
