RE: Nvidia or ATI?
by hiccuby on Tuesday June 28th 2011, 11:02
I've run Starcraft 2 at both systems. My home setup is a 9800GTX+ SLI'd with a 9800/9800GTX+ nvidia cards and the game runs just fine under medium settings (anything higher will cause fps drops post 5 minutes in game). At work I test AMD Graphics (formerly ATI), and Starcraft 2 is one of my graphics tests I perform on it. I am actually quite impressed with the amount of progression ATI has taken the past year in driver development in linux which I can run Starcraft 2 on medium settings with a business class notebook and have the same results as my home desktop. Granted my home desktop is still on DDR2 4gb, with an athlon 750 kuma, but notebook performance with gaming is still inferior to desktop gaming. I'm not allowed to disclose the amd graphics brands that I am reporting here due to them not being released yet, but I would confidently say if you get amd graphics that their past reputation in linux gaming doesn't hold to the current level that their new hardware performs at. I'm actually interested in seeing their desktop graphics perform with SC2. Now I can say that with shaders turned passed medium, water graphics glitch and become a purple-pink color, but nvidia has somewhat similar issues too and this most likely goes back down to wine's implementation. Hope this helps you make your decision, I'm a big supporter of both companies!
