I think something happened recently because I have the same problem, and it WAS working before (a few days ago).
I tried reinstalling steam, deleting everything but the steam.exe, but it refuses to login.
I have also tried many different wine versions, including the PlayOnLinux install.
Mine crashes with "dbghelp:elf_search_auxv can't find symbol in module"
