The Steam client is a bit flaky. I don't know the full details - but apparently it uses an 'infinite' sized drawing canvas. This upsets most Window managers to some degree. In normal (non-virtual desktop mode) KDE 4.7.x will 'lose' the Steam client window if it is draged off the edge of a desktop.
I will be v. interested to see how well Unity handles this issue. I will be testing 12.04 soon (HD space is reserved)... Gnome 3 however is already dead to me. :-)
