There isn't any other way to troubleshoot Wine problems. I would recommend reading up on the (rather extensive) Ubuntu Wiki pages on how to use a BASH terminal.
There will always be the odd occasion when you need some commandline savvy to get you out a (non-Wine related) hole anyway!
A would be patient with Wine - it takes a fair bit of time to get used to how it works. If you are in a hurry you could use a Wine derivative (e.g. Crossover, PlayOnLinux, etc.)... I don't see the point in this (since you cut yourself off from direct help/support from the Wine developers)...
