I was playing around with the fullscreen options and I was able to reproduce the same effect that I was getting in Wine 1.2 on Ubuntu - namely that the terrain was indeed viewable, but the clouds were this weird black hexagony stuff, it still looked distorted. An upgrade this way, and playable, but not quite right...

With Wine 1.2 on OS X (or whichever version comes with WineBottler, but I think it's 1.2) I also got the grey overlay. After much experimentation it turned out to only happen if terrain quality was set to low. At medium the greyness went away.
I do however have multiple terrain rendering bugs. For example plain hills look more like a green moon landscape.
