RE: open beta fails at splash

This worked for me as well. I applied the 2 patches, compiled wine 1.5.2 in ubuntu 12.04 32bit virtual box (I run 12.04 x64 naively, wine refuses to compile 32bit on x64 systems thanks to multiarch), compressed and copied the resulting directory after ./configure and make, then used winetricks to install those 3 packages named in the post above. One small typo though, it's actually d3dx9. If you're having trouble getting winetricks to run with your compiled and patched version of wine, this may help:
WINE=~/wine-1.5.2/wine sh ~/wine-1.5.2/winetricks
replace "~/wine-1.5.2" with your complied path and the location of the winetricks script ( I put it in the same place for convenience.
Hopefully the servers come up again before the free weekend is up, and I get a chance to actually play. :)
