RE: A debate about game rating
by Alexey Loukianov on Tuesday November 29th 2011, 4:19
Actually we're on a slim ice here: RAGE requires a library which is a part of DirectX runtime which is in turn a part of a standard Windows installation. Wine aims to support this runtime natively (but currently is far from that obviously). What you have is essentially a third-party dll override auto-installed for you by Steam client. Yeah, from your end-user perspective and only for this case it looks like "working out of the box" but what you really has is a auto-using "third-party dll override". There are some cases when Steam would fail to do auto-installs (and actually what I'm used to is to manually prevent it doing so) and some users would end up with non-working game due to Wine lacking required libs and would have to resort into manually installing required dll-overrides. That's are the reasons why RAGE shouldn't be rated higher than Gold for now.

Long desc short: rating RAGE as Platinum would confuse people into thinking that the game itself works under Wine without dll overrides - which is not really a case.
