The frustrating thing was that it had all been working, but I'd upgraded to Ubuntu 12, but re-installed 11 (because SWTOR doesn't work in 12 atm). Then I remembered one detail from my original setup, which turned out to matter. In my non-working setup, in winecfg I had Win XP as the default, but Win 7 selected for launcher. By setting Win 7 as the default, and launcher to use the default, things started working again, SWTOR went straight to the character selection screen. [post new] [reply to this]
