Sorry about the bother. It was the flash drive. Funny it never came up with any errors when installing. I originally copied it with Linux and had used the flash drive to install the netbook remix on the netbook, so decided to format it in windows as it had been formated with the usb creator in linux and copy the files to it with windows, and it installed. But I had the same error even when I copied the files to the local hard drive from the cd across the network. I have never had a problem running windows exe from the linux hard drive before.
Now I only have to find why sound won't work with wine but that is a another day. There must be something missing from the netbook remix. The console error when checking sound in winecfg is:
