If my research is correct, Mafia is protected by SafeDisc v2. I don't think this works with mounted ISO images ( which I believe you are using? ). Can you try with your originals?
I'm in the same boat as yourself and having recently moved house, digging out the originals would be a bit of a pain ( but not out of the question, this is one of my favourite games :D )
Maybe something like cdemu will help though. I am about to try it out and will post back my findings.
