It does this on windows when you first install it. Its totally normal for it to do that. What I do to fix it is by going to control panel in Ares then go to Chat tab and type in some random name for your nickname.
Then close Ares and then open it again. Then it should connect in 5 mins. The first connection always takes some time. Sometimes it helps if you click on disconnect and connect to force connection.
