RE: graphics restart in 3.1?
by Erik Walthinsen on Wednesday April 15th 2009, 18:35
Ever since 3.0 any time I switch away to another desktop I stand an extremely strong chance of the game simply freezing up completely, requiring a hard kill -9. This primarily happens when I'm in Northrend, and almost never when I'm on my bank alt in Thunder Bluff. I have not managed to isolate anything that causes it to be more likely otherwise. It gets *really* annoying as it makes it impossible for me to do anything else e.g. while flying somewhere.

I haven't noticed if 3.1 is particularly worse, but it certainly isn't any better.

I don't have it as bad as the other poster, but changing the refresh rate worked for me to resolve any lingering graphical artifacts.

I was having the same issues and was getting really frustrated. Had to essentially quit the game and start it again if I ever had to alt-tab.

I have an Nvidia 8600gts 256 mb. AMD64x2-6400, 4gb DDR2, on Kubuntu Intrepid, KDE4.2. (would do the same in Kubuntu Gusty, KDE3.5)

What I did eventually to resolve the issue was change the in-game video setting to use windowed mode and check the two boxes below that as well (sorry, at school atm, don't remember what they are exactly). By doing this, there is essentially no difference in how the game looks, but alt-tab is handled perfectly. The program you alt-tab to will show up on top of wow, and the graphics will corupt a little and frame rates will drop, but when you alt-tab back to WoW, it will return to normal.

Give this a shot, after spending hours looking for a solution, this one resolved it for me.
;)
