Recount is an addon that parses the combat log in real time. Ad I recall desktop effects is the same as compositing in Gnome. I noticed you are running the 180 nVidia driver from the ubuntu repo, you may want to try one of the 190 driver from nVidia. I would give you a link to it but I don't have the download page bookmarked on my phone. You should be able to find it if you Google for it.
