Thanks for your help.

I am indeed running xorg 7.4.

I tried downloading the driver from amd.com, but it won't install. The error message is

Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version
default:v2:i686:lib::none:2.6.31-20-generic; make sure that the version is being correctly set by --iscurrentdistro

which I can only assume is because the driver (or the installer) doesn't support recent kernels.

I've also tried the Ubuntu package, but X won't even start when I try that, so I removed it again. I didn't fiddle with xorg.conf, though (using KMS at the moment), so maybe I should give it another go.

Right, this isn't going anywhere:

The Ubuntu fglrx package does not support my graphics card.
The installer at amd.com does not work with my current kernel, as ATI have stopped supporting Linux distros for my graphics card as of February 2009 (they still update the driver for Windows).

I guess the only possible solutions are to
- not play WoW
- downgrade to a pre-February '09 linux distro, with all the package update blocking that would entail.
- buy a new graphics card.

When I removed Windows from my current machine, I promised myself I would never run Windows again. I think I will put ATI graphics cards in the same booth from now on... :-(
