The problem is that other companies are just as unlikely to support their older gear as ATI has been - which is why the open source driver is such an exciting thing. Open source means that 3DFX is still supported on Linux because there is always someone out there willing to make it go.
I think you should give the older version of Ubuntu a shot as it's pretty easy and you could have that working within a day or so - it's just an ISO away - and I get the feeling that it will just work for you.
No one ever said Linux would be easier, but I can't live without it as an Operating System now. I'd been using Linux for years before I just decided to not use Windows anymore and the only difficulties I've had are with _both_ ATI and nVidia drivers for 3D. I had some ALSA (sound) problems on occasion but they were usually because the configs I made worked but were incorrect. Anyway, once the ATI Open Source driver is complete then we'll never have to deal with this ever again however, so I'm looking forward to it myself!
