I hear what you're saying, although right now I'm more inclined to buying a new graphics card. $100-150 should get me a long way towards a good graphics card with proprietory driver support, and presumably the open source driver will catch up with things eventually, so that I won't need to buy a new one in a year's time.
And downgrading to Ubuntu 8.xx isn't exactly my cup of tea, seing as the release of 10.4 is approaching.
I've never been much of a 3D gamer, but having just discovered that wine can actually handle 3D graphics, I'm inclined to look into it some more, so I would probably need to upgrade the card anyway.
Either way, thanks for your help. You probably saved me a few days of frustrated googling. :-)
