what version of WINE are you using?
are you using the 64 bit or i386 for 9.04?
Do you have POL.exe set to Windows Vista Mode?
What Proprietary driver are you using? I have had much luck with the Nvidia 1.80.
If you do need to reinstall, what you can do is to copy your .wine/drive_c/programfiles/playonline folder onto another drive, once you reinstall OS and game, you can copy over the files that are already updated, there will be a check for the version number and a file check, but no download of update required, additionally, if you copy over all of the files and change the registry to that of the correct version # it should not require the file check.
