After killing pol.exe I was able to run updates and login. I am now downloading the 20K updated files... :)
One thing I notice on this machine that didn't happen in the past is that if another window partialy covers the POL window, POL hangs and refuses to respond. Just to be safe I have POL in it's own desktop and before I switch desktops to check on it I minimize all open windows on the desktop I'm switching from. No compiz, no desktop effects enabled. Wine is not using a virtual desktop.

FYI, if you get this bug and kill pol, then try reinstalling, then you'll be warned that it'll delete all files in the installation folder. Then, it'll appear to have hung again while it does exactly that. Be patient, give it a little while (even 10-15 minutes) and it should come back and start installing.
