Just out of curiosity, are you using the nvidia drivers or an open source driver? Also, it may help if you disable any kind of compositing (i.e. compiz) before running FFXI.

im going to go ahead and install fedora on another hard drive tonight. I want to see what is going on and what, if anything i can deduce.
I have noticed that bard effects on 1.1.22 are much slower than 1.1.21 and will be trying both of them out this week on fedora (if i manage to get it up and running or find the download) you might want to try using 1.1.21 but i dont think it should have that much of an effect, though it has been the fastest and most stable for me.
im kinda grasping at straws here, but what is your resolution set to? are you using windowed mode? are you using a virtual desktop? are you using the 1.80 driver? how did you get your driver?
i understand your frustration, FFXI was the last thing holding me to windows and i want to help as many of our fellow Vana'dieliens to be free. lets see what we can do together. anyone else have any ideas?
