That's very odd. Not see it in FFXI yet but I have seen it when running games off steam with the xorg-edgers ppa. Don't have a solution for this one other than remove the ppa if you have it.
However I might have worked out the black border issue. The problem "OffscreenRenderingMode backbuffer" from my previous post.
Try setting it to fbo. Works on my 10v so far at both 640x480 (512x512 3D) and 1024x600 (1024x1024 3D), still slow.
