The text worked fine for me on Debian 4.0 stable. Though, definitely try installing the "msttcorefonts" package (I know this is needed for the text in "Portal" to display properly). Otherwise try turning up the debugging level in Wine and look for messages regarding fonts.

Try to disable GLSL (set UseGLSL in Registry to disabled) - this helped me with a GF8600GTS (which Card to you have?). (Drawback is that some effects don't work).
