If a previous version worked better for you then you should use it. Wine is still (and proablly forever) somewhat unstable, sometimes in order to improve one aspect of the program you have to break another part.
If you can't find the old version through ubuntu you can find it through the wine website. Take a look at www.winehq.org/site/download-deb it has some more
