Good news, just compiled wine-1.1.21-290-gd4e1d88 and the X Server no longer crashes, so that's a huge improvement at least. There's still no display in the game; menu screen is just blank, although by listening to the sound effects, I can select "Quit" at the bottom of it and exit the game (so input works and the game appears to operate normally except for no display...). Have not bisected to figure out which commit(s) have gotten to at least this point...
