Ops sorry, I just understand that the bars are called HUDs and there is another post. I apologize. Anyway problem persists even changing video setting related to textures.

I found the same thing happening to me -- status bar and weapons selection console not visible -- but it began when I upgraded my graphics driver.
I was using the NVIDIA binary driver v180 that ships with Ubuntu 9.04, but then upgraded using PPA-packaged drivers to either v185 or v190 and saw this problem in both.
Note that even with the old driver, I occasionally get missing textures (shows up as a black instead of a face/poster/sign/etc), so even for me the older driver isn't a complete solution.
