I can't test this with the wine versions prior to 1.2-rc1 as the new Steam client version works incorrectly - windows are not visible at all.
As for 1.2-rc1 it takes just the same long time to start HL2:EP2 as with 1.2-rc6. I've been suspecting that the cause for this is the Steam Cloud synchronizing the saves but turning it off for HL2:EP2 makes no difference. Have to say that HL2:EP2 really takes significantly more time to start up comparing with HL2:EP1, HL2 and HL:Source.
On the other hand I can't tell for sure that this long-starting behavior was introduced in the latest versions of wine, and even more - I'm not sure that this is wine-specific. We need someone to test this on windows to be sure.
