Sounds to me like /etc/X11/xorg.conf isn't configured correctly. I don't know too much, but the error message tells me that the resolution you're trying to use isn't defined for the driver you're using. Or the resolution isn't defined in your xorg.conf file. Check your Xorg.0.log (under /var/logs) for messages: (EE) error or (WW) warning. That could give you more clues.

You wouldn't be using an ATI card would you? I had the same white screen problem when getting Compiz-Fusion to run under the ATI proprietary drivers (fglrx). If you are using ATI/AMD via fglrx, make sure to run 'aticonfig --initial -f' as root. You'd likely have to add some options to the 'Device' section as well.
