Your wine version is way too old, consider upgrading to a more recent version. Also make sure that "Allow the window manager to control the windows" is turned on in the Graphics tab in winecfg.

I upgraded to 1.1.37 per feedback. The keyboard now works (yay!) but only insofar as I do not bring up a different active window or application, or switch desktops. If I make another application active, and then return to GW, then I again lose keyboard input and cannot recover the keyboard. Mouse still works though.
Anyway, it is 100% playable now, as long as I am careful not to leave the active GW application or current desktop.
