The black background is in my experience caused by the default for the "OffscreenRenderingMode" registry key with ATI Linux proprietary drivers up to version 10.4.
If that applies to you (say, you are running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and installed the ATI fglrx drivers as prompted) there are 2 solutions:
- Download a newer driver version from ATI website and upgrade your graphics drivers, making sure you wipe clean the current ones first
- Run "regedit" and add a registry key under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D called "OffscreenRenderingMode" and give it the value "backbuffer"
