I have been using wine v1.2, 1.3 and 1.3.1 with GW without any problems, from v1.2 onwards I had the same problem with the backbuffer setting, but the blackscreen issue had been fixed.
Can you try upgrading to the 25x.xxx series?
Also, I had problems going from sub v1.1.44 to v1.2 with the same wineprefix, have you tried making a new clean one?
