4.000-5.000 FPS with a GeForce GTX 260 is not much on glxgears. I have a GeForce 8600 GT which is less powerfull than your graphics card and I'm getting 6.000 FPS with glxgears. My system is an Ubuntu 12.04 dev 64 bit with the NVIDIA driver 295.20 too. Are you using the X-Server 1.11.4?

Maybe you should try starting in Classic mode (not Unity) and see if that fixes the problem.
If it does, your problem is the Unity desktop, which uses 3D Acceleration, and is probably using all of your video card's resources. If not, I'd double-check that the proprietary drivers were correctly installed.
