How is your xorg.conf created? Normally I'm using in a terminal "nvidia-xconfig --no-logo" to create the default xorg.conf for NVIDIA drivers (with disabled logo at startup).
If this problem has something to do with the resolutions upgrading to Wine 1.5.9 could maybe help because it supports xrandr 1.2 and 1.3 in this version.
