When exactly do you crash? Before the characters 3d models are displayed? or after?
If it's the former, then this sounds like the vertex shader issue, for which a fix is described here. You need to do what the top comment of Julio Fernandez says at its bottom... (if you tried the modified dll and it didn't work, that is).
And - if you have an ATI chipset, you may be out of luck. NVidia seems to work well though. I played here and it ran even better than on windows...
I had a good description of how I got EQ running with a custom compiled wine (just editing this one return value in a direct x library) - but the jerks that took over administration of this area deleted all the most recent gold-status test reports *completely* because they can... All my work gone and the /%&$/§% responsible didn't even bother to respond to my inquiry above...
Whoever put those people in charge is NOT doing the wine project a favour - they are definitely pissing people off.
