We (nvidia users), at least me, gets on startup a dialog box that says:

Age of Empires 3
Error: Unable to find splash resources

Click OK, and program aborts

I can't entirely test this, as I don't have an nvidia card handy, but just a thought - is the problem related to Xorg version? I'm running an ATI card with Xorg 7.2 and it runs fine, but Spike (he commented earlier) is running an ATI with Xorg 7.1 and he produces the exact same error as nvidia users.

I tried AOE3 with wine 0.9.40 with your options.

It resulted in a black screen as well. But, It seemed to work better
than without it. Before It would only get to the splash screen and hang.

Question. i saw people posting errors about this condition. When i get the black screen, I dont know how to get out of it. I end up going to tty1 (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and typing /etc/init.d/gdm stop, to kill it.
Then my terminal window is gone. Is there a way I can preserve this?
I am suspecting there is a wine error log, but I dont know where it is.
