OK, today after various patching and I don't know what, it kind've works.. no F keys or escape key, so I can't save game. Sigh, my computer is an insane idiopathic lunatic junkheap apparently.

Not Experiencing this problem myself. The intro videos do seem to have become blank though, but hitting ESC a few times until it says "Loading Arcanum" skips through this problem.

Is it possible to switch between Gnome and XFCE? Would you be willing to try and see if it works?
