No pulse audio here, I removed it as soon as I installed Kubuntu.

I'll try the padsp wine thing, but I don't know how much it will help, considering that the game plays the menu beeps, it just lacks music, dialougue, and sound effects.

I had forgotten to mention that I also tried padsp and aoss (after installing the 32-bit libraries it requires). With the exact same sound configuration, DXDiag (I did install DX 9.0c on Wine) passes all sound tests except the hardware buffering tests (HDA NVidia Conexant audio device here) and several other games I tried all have sound.

woohoo! thanks for the advice. i went in to configure wine. i changed the audio from alsa to oss, and it works like a dream now! smooth sound, music, voices, all of it. :D

i have wine 1.1.42 on 10.04 lucid lynx
