As apparently noone has similar problems You'd better describe your HW configuration, OS Distribution, Kernel, gfx drivers version. Did you install DirectX from the Oblivion DVD? (WINEDLLOVERRIDES="mscoree=none" wine DXSETUP.EXE)

I have the same exact issue. When i click "Play" the screens blinks balck. the resolution changes to something around 800x600 and then the games silently crashes leaving the resolution set very low.
Ubuntu 8.04 -
