well the patch helped now when i run it in wine under a virtual desktop i allows me to chose some more useable resolutions.
it still is not detecting the video card, but now i can play it windowed, if i remove the virtual desktop constraint it goes back to the former problems.
so for so good...

i can not find the file i am supposed to be editing here, i am obvously missing something very basic, (and probably about to bite me).. but im new to linux and only a step above a howling monkey anyway.
in same howto they suggest not using papsd with the newer versions of wine.
