I updated my gfx drivers via Envy and the crashing stopped. Yay!
Played for about 5 hours without a problem.
The problem with the keys was actually related to alt-tabbing and the key layout. Left Alt was mapped to zoom and somehow that caused problems.
Once the problem started you could only right-click until you were in the docking bay, then hit the alt until the zoom effect happens, then wait until it unzooms.
Although it is not possible to unhook the right-alt key via the control screen I found the data in the reg that needs to be edited:
Close any wine apps running. (note that it can take a few secs until the system actually is down).
Open system.reg
Locate "InputKeymapping" and it will be tailed by a large hex array.
Find the value "04" in the second line and change it to "00".
This also disables the joystick setting for the zoom.
