It was failing with a brand new .wine directory, created by wine 0.9.34 so it's odd it's out of date.
Oops, i forgot to start timidity.
On gentoo:
emerge timidity++
rc-update add timidity default
and probably to set up timidity.
eselct timidity
AND /etc/init.d/timidity start
However, the crash problem seems to have been caused by running in win98 mode. Simply changing to XP emulation instead fixed things, and the midi and fixwine weren't necessary.
I hadn't heard of fixwine, and it's good to know about the useful registry keys. Thankyou.
