With that switch it starts, and I can move the mouse and highlight things and the game seems to work fine. Then, very quickly, it drops me to the desktop again, with no other output than what I first posted.
I've tried downgrading to 1.0 with the same effect, I've tried using a non-custom resolution (which it didn't do - it still kept at my widescreen res).
